چکیده

The Gas Push–Pull Test (GPPT) is a tool for measuring in situ soil processes including methane oxidation. To quantify methane oxidation, methane and non-reactive gases selected based on transport behaviour similar to methane, were injected into soil above a petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated aquifer and gas samples were extracted over time. The rate of loss of methane was compared to the loss of tracer gases and differences in the concentrations were attributed to microbial activity. To further support the evidence for microbial methane consumption, tests were also performed under conditions of inhibited microbial activity. D 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Transport of methane and noble gases during gas push-pull tests in variably saturated porous media.

The gas push-pull test (GPPT) is a single-well gas-tracer method to quantify in situ rates of CH4 oxidation in soils. To improve the design and interpretation of GPPT field experiments, gas component transport during GPPTs was examined in abiotic porous media over a range of water saturations (0.0 < or = Sw < or = 0.61). A series of GPPTs using He, Ne, and Ar as tracers for CH4 were performed a...

Evaluation of the in-situ aerobic cometabolism of chlorinated ethenes by toluene-utilizing microorganisms using push-pull tests.

A series of transport, biostimulation, and activity push-pull tests were performed under induced and natural gradient conditions in a trichloroethene (TCE) and cis-dichloroethene (c-DCE) contaminated aquifer. Transport tests demonstrated the feasibility of injecting and recovering complex solute mixtures from the aquifer. During the biostimulation tests, decreases in toluene concentration and t...

Determination of Methane Oxidation in the Rhizosphere of Sagittaria landfolia Using Methyl Fluoride

Methane oxidation in the rhizosphere of wetland plants may significantly attenuate methane losses from wetland soils to the atmosphere. Our objective was to measure the extent of methane production and oxidation in the rhizosphere of a common wetland plant (Sagittaria landfolia L. Per.). Methyl fluoride (CH3F), a water-soluble gas and a specific inhibitor of methane oxidation, was used in conju...

Site-specific data are needed to perform feasibility assessments and remedial design for in situ bioremediation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon (CAH) contamination in ground water. Site-specific data are needed because treatment effectiveness is determined by the metabolic capabilities of native microorganisms, the combinations and concentrations of contaminants, and a variety of other fac...

A note on in situ estimates of sorption using push-pull tests

[1] A sensitivity analysis reveals that large uncertainty exists in estimates of solute retardation factor R made from sorption push-pull tests. A simplified push-pull data interpretation method for estimating instantaneous linear sorption in confined aquifers is developed. The new method is less restrictive in its application than the conventional method that uses an approximate analytical sol...
